ATHLETICS: Carrie Russell secures victory in Italy
Improving Jamaican sprinter Carrie Russell secured her fourth victory since the 2013 World Championships in Moscow by winning the women’s 200 metres at the Rieti World Challenge meet in Italy yesterday.
Russell, of MVP Track Club, won in personal-best 22.62.
Veteran Jamaican Aleen Bailey was fourth in 23.45, with Great Britain’s Margaret Adeoye, second in 22.88.
Stephanie McPherson, also of the MVP Track Club, secured another victory for Jamaica by winning the women’s 400 metres in 50 seconds flat.
McPherson finished ahead of her Jamaican and MVP teammate Kaliese Spencer.
Spencer, a 400-metre hurdles specialist, posted a season-best 50.19 for the flat 400.
Another MVP athlete, Rusheen McDonald crossed the line first in the seldom run 300 metres in a time of 31.97 ahead of Italian pair, Diego Marani, 32.85 and Lorenzo Valentini, 33.18.
Another Jamaican, Andrea Bliss, 12.93, was second to Australia’s Sally Pearson, 12.64, in the women’s 100 metre hurdles.
O’Dayne Richards of Jamaica, with 20.10 metres, was second behind Tomasz Majewski of Poland in the men’s shot put.
Majewski won with an effort of 20.30 metres.
