Tivoli Committee starts online petition

Published:Wednesday | September 11, 2013 | 10:27 AM

The Tivoli Committee has started an online petition to get public support as it seeks audience in parliament to make a presentation on the 2010 West Kingston incursion.

The Committee wants a representative to address the House of Representatives on the ongoing plight of those who suffered during the police-military operation.

The operation, which was aimed at executing an arrest warrant on then strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, left more than 70 persons dead and extensive damage to communities.

Residents also accused the security forces of ill-treatment and extrajudicial killings.

The Tivoli Committee says three years later many residents continue to suffer and they want to bring their plight to legislators.

It notes that the rules of the House make allowance for citizens to bring urgent matters to the attention of the country's elected representatives.

The online petition comes as the Tivoli Committee plans to stage a march from Tivoli Gardens to Gordon House next Tuesday.

The Committee says the petition will be delivered to the House Speaker.
