Breastfeeding week starts today

Published:Sunday | September 15, 2013 | 11:47 AM

Today marks the start of National Breastfeeding Week..

The week is being observed under the theme - Support Breastfeeding: Working Closely with Mothers.

Director of Nutrition Services at the Ministry of Health, Sharmaine Edwards, says the week of activities will seek to underscore the importance of breastfeeding in the development of Jamaica’s children.

She says the ministry will also use the occasion to encourage families, communities and workplaces to be supportive of mothers as they endeavour to exclusively breastfeed.

Manager of Dietic Services at the health ministry, Deon Bent, says breastfeeding within the first hour of life is very important as it helps to regulate the heartbeat of infants and reduce illnesses and deaths.

Both women were speaking at a Jamaica Information Service Think Tank held in Kingston last Thursday.
