Police report increase in illegal gun seizures

Published:Sunday | September 15, 2013 | 4:32 PM

The Jamaica Constabulary Force is reporting that the number of illegal firearms recovered this year is higher than the comparable last year.

A release from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) this afternoon said 507 illegal firearms were seized by the police in the nine months of this year, compared with 417 for the similar period last year.

For last week, the CCN said seven pistols, including one .38 revolver and approximately 98 assorted rounds of ammunition were seized in the St James, Kingston West, Hanover, Manchester, Kingston Central and St Catherine North Police Divisions.

The CCN highlighted that six persons were arrested and taken into custody without a single shot being fired or anyone being harmed.

In the meantime, the police is encouraging those with illegal guns and ammunition to surrender and not to attack on approach in a bid to reduce casualties.
