Jamaica Labour Party councilors renew call for May Pen Mayor's resignation

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councilors in Clarendon have stepped up calls for May Pen Mayor Scean Barnswell to immediately resign.

The Contractor General has referred Mayor Barnswell to the Director of Public Prosecutions for allegedly knowingly misleading his office during the conduct of his investigation into the illegal construction of 10 shops at the Spaldings market.

The JLP councilors say they are disappointed about Mayor Barnswell’s alleged misleading testimony.

They say while Mayor Barnswell is within his right to consult with his lawyer on the matter, he should immediately resign.

They say they will find it difficult to attend meetings he chairs or to function effectively under his leadership.

The call from the JLP councilors follows the resignation of junior works minister Richard Azan, yesterday, for his role in the Spaldings market issue.

In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Azan stressed that he did not benefit personally from the illegal project and vowed to vigorously fight to clear his name.
