East Portland delegates cry foul

Published:Sunday | September 22, 2013 | 12:14 PM

As the race heats up for a challenge to the leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), delegates in East Portland are claiming that their names have been mysteriously removed from the voters’ list.

The accusation by dozens of persons claiming to be delegates stoked tensions and threatened to disrupt a meeting in Portland on Friday where JLP leader Andrew Holness was in attendance.

One delegate, Errol Hanna, charged that the omission of the names demonstrated a blatant and wanton disregard for delegates.

Hanna, who is also a member of the East Portland constituency executive, also questioned how a new delegates' list could have been created for the constituency without a properly convened meeting of the executive.

However, JLP deputy chairman Dr Andrew Wheatley has called the allegations baseless and rubbish.

Holness is being challenged by one of his deputy leaders, North East Manchester Member of Parliament Audley Shaw.
