Verlando Small has won the 2013 season of the Digicel Rising Stars competition.

This is the first time in the 10-year history of the competition that a musician is winning the contest entered every year by thousands of hopefuls.

Small, who plays the saxophone, had found early favour with his audience and the panel of judges and would survive the final rounds to the end with fellow contender Kadian Thompson, who emerged second.

There were wild cheers in the studio of Television Jamaica as Small was announced the 2013 Digicel Rising Stars and the winner of $1 million.

Thompson walked away with $600,000.

“The feedback this week was great,” Small said before he was announced winner.

Thompson also revelled in the memories. “It was really good,” she said.
