Shaw not satisfied with Herbert Thompson's resignation

Jamaica Labour party leadership aspirant, Audley Shaw, is insisting Dr. Herbert Thompson must resign fully from the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.

Yesterday, Dr. Thompson resigned as chairman of the ECJ but said he would remain a member of the Commission.

Dr. Thompson cited the controversy surrounding his acceptance of a People’s National Party award as the reason for his resignation.

Following his resignation, the JLP issued a release saying it welcomed the resignation and that it was the honourable thing to do.

But unlike his party, Mr. Shaw is not satisfied with the development.

He wants Dr. Thompson to also give up his position as an independent member of the ECJ.

Mr Shaw says Dr Thompson must do the right thing in resigning from both positions as remaining in either, would cast a shadow of doubt over the ECJ and its function.

Mr Shaw argues that Dr Thompson exercised poor judgement in attending and receiving an award from the PNP, and in effect, cast a shadow over his position which requires a posture of unquestionable impartiality.
