Tufton clarifies media report on future in JLP

Published:Monday | September 30, 2013 | 5:24 PM

Jamaica Labour Party Deputy Leader Dr Christopher Tufton, is seeking to clarify his comments in the media which suggested he could leave the JLP if Audley Shaw does not win the upcoming leadership election.

The Sunday Gleaner reported that losses for Shaw and or for him as deputy leader could see him walking away from politics altogether.

He was quoted as saying leaving politics was an option but that he would not think to join the People’s National Party.

However, in a media release today, Tufton says he has absolutely no plans to leave the JLP.

And he says the comments to The Sunday Gleaner were focused on the likely posture of any leader who emerges from the upcoming internal election.

He says if a leader emerged and took the approach to purge the Party of persons perceived not to be in support of his leadership then that could result in further internal divisiveness and electoral losses.

Tufton was nominated unopposed as Deputy Leader for another year at yesterday’s meeting of the JLP’s Area Council Four.
