Submissions begin in Bunting's contempt of court hearing

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

Submissions began today in the contempt of court case which Shureny Quant has brought against Minster of National Security Peter Bunting.



Quant is contending that Bunting breached a Supreme Court ruling when he ordered his deportation to his homeland Curaçao.



Queen's Counsel Michael Hylton, who is representing Bunting, today raised objections to Quant's application.



Hylton has asked for a court order for Quant to prove that he has money to pay legal costs in the event he is not successful in the case.



Justice Horace Marsh heard the application in chambers and is to rule on the matter tomorrow.



Quant, who is being represented by Attorneys-at-Law Carolyn Reid-Cameron, and Chukwuemeka Cameron, is claiming that when he was deported in April there was a Supreme Court order in place which had barred his deportation.



Quant is asking for the national security minister to be imprisoned for unlawfully removing him from Jamaica, and refusing to tell the court the reasons for his detention or his whereabouts.



Quant contends in court documents that his deportation constitutes an enforced disappearance of persons and has described it as a crime against humanity.
