Unscrupulous persons forced UDC to close Little Dunn's River

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is defending its decision to close the Belmont in Ocho Rios, St Ann known as Little Dunn’s River.

The UDC says it decided to prohibit members of the public from accessing the area to prevent its unauthorised use.

The Ocho Rios Ministers’ Fraternal protested yesterday morning to voice their objections to the government’s move arguing that the time is inappropriate given National Heritage Week celebrations.

However, the UDC says it had no choice but to close the property given the unscrupulous practice of some persons who have been illegally operating at the property and charging persons for its use.

It said the public will be allowed to use the Beach after control measures are implemented to ensure safety and order and after it has been developed for public use.

The UDC says the development plans include the provision of the requisite amenities, the creation of a boardwalk for safer access to the falls and parking to alleviate the congestion created along the roadway leading in and out of the town of Ocho Rios.

The Ministers' Fraternal says members are prepared to continue protesting and will mobilise their entire congregations to participate if it becomes necessary.
