EU provides $1b for sugar dependent communities

Communities in sugar-dependent areas across the island are set to benefit from two European Union (EU) budget support disbursements valued at $1.3 billion.

The EU made the announcement on Saturday at a meeting in the United States attended by finance and planning minister, Dr Peter Phillips.

The two disbursements are under the Jamaican Strategy for the Adaptation of the Sugar Industry programme 2006-2020.

The funds are specifically geared towards improving the standard of living and well-being of Jamaicans in sugar dependent areas.

This latest EU support follows September’s announcement of $951 million in budgetary support to help the Jamaican government deal with the effects of natural disasters.
