Portia, Andrew urge selflessness in Heroes’ Day messages
Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller has called for all Jamaicans to draw on the history of selfless national service given by Jamaica’s heroes.
In her Heroes’ Day message, Simpson Miller says Jamaicans need now more than ever to capture their history of putting the interests of others ahead of themselves and risking their lives for others.
This Heroes’ Day is being celebrated under the theme, ‘History, Our Strength’, and Simpson Miller says Jamaica’s rich and resonant history is what has helped Jamaicans to never lose hope in the face of our challenges.
She reiterates that National Heroes day and National Heritage Week is celebrated to remind the nation that our heroes and heroine exemplify the greatness that is within us.
Opposition Leader Andrew Holness says as Jamaicans face many challenges, National Heroes Day provides us with a chance to reflect on, and acknowledge the work and sacrifices of our pioneers.
He says after 51 years of Independence there now needs to be a renewal of the vision we want Jamaica to be.
Holness says Jamaica needs now more than ever, activists like the heroes who laid the foundation for our nation.
He says Jamaica particularly needs heroes who will champion the economic independence of Jamaica, stand up against corruption in politics and public life, and who will work for the education and empowerment of all our people.
