Portland quarry operator tractors set ablaze

Published:Monday | October 21, 2013 | 6:41 PM

A quarry and sand mining operator in Portland, Mark Wallen, is still in shock after two of his heavy-duty tractors were reportedly set ablaze by suspected arsonists.

The incident took place shortly before 3 a.m. in Swift River.

The police say they were called after residents saw fire coming from the direction of the quarry.

Wallen, who was obviously shaken-up by the loss, says he is still not clear as to who could have set his tractors on fire, as he enjoyed a good relationship with the community.

He says that residents were also bothered by the incident, which is the first of that kind to have taken place in that rural community, which thrives heavily on farming.

The police have theorised that persons may have dumped fuel onto the heavy duty equipment and afterwards set them on fire.

Total damage is estimated at approximately $3.8 million.
