German Chancellor demands explanation from US

Published:Thursday | October 24, 2013 | 8:24 AM

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly contacted US President Barack Obama after she was informed that the US may have spied on her mobile phone.

A spokesman for Merkel says she views this as completely unacceptable and wants US officials to clarify the extent of their surveillance in Germany.

However, The White House says Obama has informed the German Chancellor that the US was not snooping on her communications.

The US has angered its European allies over spying allegations that are based on material believed to have originated from American fugitive Edward Snowden.
