Former Turks and Caicos premier to be extradited

Published:Wednesday | October 30, 2013 | 9:55 AM

Authorities in the Turks and Caicos have welcomed the decision by a court in Brazil to extradite former premier Michael Misick to his island home.

The court made the ruling yesterday.

In a statement, the Attorney General's office in the TCI said it is in the best interests of that country that allegations of wrongdoing are thoroughly investigated.

It said while Misick’s lawyers vigorously opposed his extradition, the court was unanimous in its decision.

The Attorney General's Office said arrangements will be made to return the former premier to the TCI as soon as possible.

Misick faces trial in the TCI Supreme Court on a number of serious charges relating to corruption and maladministration during his time in office.

Misick fled the TCI last year after an arrest warrant was issued for him in relation to allegations of corruption.

He was located and arrested in December 2012 in Brazil.
