Former UWI principal begins tenure at Port Authority today

Published:Friday | November 1, 2013 | 7:47 AM

Former principal of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Gordon Shirley is to officially take up office as Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Jamaica, today.

Professor Shirley replaces Noel Hylton who left the Authority on October 30 after serving for almost 40 years.

Making the announcement in June, Transport and Works Dr Omar Davies said it was important to identify a suitable person to lead the Authority at this critical time.

He said it was critical because Jamaica is seeking to extend its port facilities to capitalise on opportunities which could accrue from the extension of the Panama Canal.

Professor Shirley is on secondment from the UWI for three years.
