Take education seriously - Thwaites

Published:Saturday | November 2, 2013 | 6:29 PM

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites said for Jamaica to fulfil its development goals more people must start taking education seriously.

Speaking at the University of Technology’s inaugural Education Day Exposition on Thursday, Thwaites lamented that, to some extent, education is being taken for granted throughout the society.

To support this point, the minister revealed that 25 per cent of those who graduate from high schools leave with nothing more than a certificate of attendance and a pretty picture in a cap and gown.

He said a large number of those who attend universities don’t make the best use of the systems in place.

Thwaites warned that if education is not treated as a first priority, individually and collectively as a nation, nothing else is going to work.
