Cuba cracks down on private cinemas, video-game salons

Published:Saturday | November 2, 2013 | 7:09 PM

Cuba has ordered the immediate closure of dozens of privately run cinemas and video-game salons.

The Cuban government said these businesses were never authorised and that it needs to bring order to the management of independent businesses.

The communist island recently relaxed restrictions on the private sector.

As a result, some entrepreneurs have used restaurant and other business licences to operate backroom movie theatres and entertainment parlours.

The government has warned that it will take decisive action against anyone who violates the law and defended the move as an attempt to instil discipline in the private sector.
