FOOTBALL: FIFA President finds World Cup play-offs unnecessary

Published:Wednesday | November 6, 2013 | 4:52 PM

FIFA President Sepp Blatter says he does not believe World Cup qualification should involve play-offs.

According to Blatter a better solution would be where at the end of the qualification a team is either in or out.

He made the comments during a FIFA website interview ahead of next week's first-leg matches of four European play-offs, and two inter-continental play-offs.

Blatter's comments come after recently urging several FIFA confederations to seek more guaranteed entries in the 32-team World Cup at Europe's expense.

UEFA President Michel Platini, in the meanwhile, as a counter, suggested a 40-team World Cup.

The issue of entry quotas is expected to be a contending issue ahead of the FIFA presidential election in 2015.
