Gov’t to make rainwater harvesting mandatory for housing projects

Published:Saturday | November 9, 2013 | 6:24 PM

It will soon become mandatory for all housing developments to have provision for rain water harvesting whether or not they are connected to a central water supply system.

Water Minister Robert Pickersgill, who made the announcement this week, said the National Rainwater Harvesting Policy is currently being strengthened to give effect to this undertaking.

Pickersgill said other provisions being proposed for incorporation in the policy include decentralised harvesting and storage of rainwater and small scale storage at the household level.

The minister said these provisions form part of the Government’s efforts to pursue and implement initiatives to effectively address issues relating to the adequate provision of water, particularly for domestic use.
