The Ministry of Agriculture and the European Union in Jamaica will today launch a multimillion-dollar programme to help small farmers expand their businesses and help improve access to markets.

The Banana Accompanying Measures is valued at €4.7 million (J$660 million) and will be implemented over four years.

Agriculture Minister Rogar Clarke and Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Jamaica, Ambassador Paola Amadei will participate in today’s launch of the programme.

In an advisory the EU says the Banana Accompanying Measures will provide assistance to smallholder agriculture and farmers' organisations by improving the productivity and resilience of small farmers.

It further says the programme will also facilitate the sustainable access to inputs allowing banana volumes to increase and production costs to decrease.

The EU says the programme will strengthen the link between small farmers and markets.
