Scores of communities across the island have been blanketed with curfews as the police continue their efforts to contain the escalation in murders.

Police statistics show that up to the first week of this month more than 1,040 murders have been reported this year.

This is a nine per cent increase when compared to the corresponding period last year.

Yesterday, the Constabulary Communication Network announced that curfews were in place in several communities in the Corporate Area, St Catherine, Clarendon, St James, Hanover and Westmoreland.

They will remain in effect until Sunday.

According to the police statistics, these parishes account for two thirds of the murders reported this year.
