Gov't to spend $1.2b to eliminate pit latrines from schools

The Government is to inject $1.2 billion in its programme to eliminate pit latrines from 158 Jamaican schools.
Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator Sandrea Falconer announced today that those schools are to have flush systems by the 2015/2016 school year.
She told journalist at this week’s post-Cabinet press briefing that in the last school year, water-bound sanitary facilities were constructed at 33 schools.
Three more will be built during the current school year.
The $200-million project was undertaken through a partnership involving the Education Ministry, the PetroCaribe Development Fund and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund.
