UWI grants masters degree to Trinidad politician, opposition demands explanation

Trinidad and Tobago’s Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley is demanding that the University of the West Indies (UWI) explain the circumstances surrounding the granting of an Executive Master of Business Administration degree to House Speaker Wade Mark.

Rowley was responding to a Trinidad Express report that Brian Ghen, the Programme Director at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, which forms part of the UWI, had tendered his resignation over the awarding of the masters degree to Mark.

The story said sources claimed that Mr Mark did not do the course work component and was also only allowed to graduate because the school granted certain concessions to him, which including a private tutor and the option of an oral exam.

However, Mark says he never used his office to gain any special concession from the UWI and that he completed all his coursework and exams.
