Stopover arrivals for the January to November period is up 1.4 per cent relative to the same period last year, Tourism Minister Dr Wykeham McNeill says.

Speaking at the opening of the Sagicor-owned Jewel Paradise Cove Beach Resort in Discovery Bay, St Ann, McNeill said he expected the arrival numbers to remain positive for the remainder of the year.

He said marketing and promotional efforts have been effective and that 2013 will be a good year for the island’s tourism product.

He said North America continues to be the island’s biggest market, with more Canadians showing interest in vacationing on the island. But he said the country was also seeing the results of its marketing efforts targeted to Russia and Latin America.

The tourism minister said language training in Russian has therefore begun for industry workers, while training in Spanish is to be launched in a few months.

The opening of the new Jewel Resort has added 225 rooms to the local accommodation sector’s room stock. It is the third in the Jewel Resort brand by Sagicor.
