600 handcart operators registered
Kingston Mayor Angella Brown Burke says the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has started to put measures in place for the anticipated increase in vending activities in the shopping district over the Christmas season.
She says special vending areas will be set up to help manage order and safety.
Senator Brown Burke says certain streets will be converted for pedestrian traffic.
She says the special vending areas will be in place from December 18 to January 4, 2014.
The Kingston mayor says details of the Christmas plans are being finalised and the public will be advised of the arrangements in short order.
Meanwhile, Senator Brown Burke says the regularisation of handcart operators has been successful with 600 persons being registered so far.
The KSAC rolled out its registration system in September charging handcart operators an annual fee of $3,000.
Speaking at yesterday’s monthly KSAC meeting the Kingston mayor said there has been more order in the downtown shopping district since the system was implemented.
She says discussions continue with handcart operators who still have concerns.
