Mandela memorial service at UWI Chapel today

The local memorial service for the late former South African President, Nelson Mandela is to take place today.

The service is to take place at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Chapel, beginning at 2 p.m.

The chapel service is a scaled down version of the event, which was initially planned for the National Arena yesterday.

Today’s ceremony will be open to the general public, with guests being asked to be seated by 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who was in South Africa for a memorial for Mandela is set to return to the island today and will participate in a Joint Session of Parliament to pay tribute to the iconic leader tomorrow.

Mandela, who became South Africa’s first black President in 1994, after serving 27 years in prison during the Apartheid years, died last Thursday.
