Barbados gov’t to lay-off 3,000 public servants next year

Barbados’ Opposition Leader Mia Mottley has accused the government of betraying Barbadians by opting to send home 3,000 public servants next year.

Mottley, who was speaking during a press conference yesterday, said the lay-offs runs counter to the promises made by the Freundel Stuart administration during the recent election campaign.

She says the country is in a crisis and warns that an economic storm is on the horizon as the measures being implemented by the government will not stop the free fall of the Barbados economy.

Mottley criticised the government’s economic policies as ill conceived and dismissed the measures announced by Finance Minister Chris Sinckler as an attempt to appease the International Monetary Fund.

A team from the IMF has been in Barbados reviewing its economic performance.
