Place emphasis on English and Maths in schools, says Thwaites

Education Minister Ronald Thwaites has described as 'futile nonsense', the offering of nine to 13 subjects to grade seven students.

Speaking to members of the media and education stakeholders last week, Thwaites said this is in the context of secondary schools that are receiving students with very low passes in the Grade Six Achievement Test.

He said focus should be placed on English and Mathematics.

Thwaites said once the basics of secondary-level literacy and numeracy is established, all other subjects can be added.

He said this is a fundamental switch in the approach by the Education Ministry to influencing the educational outcomes of students.

He also added that teaching the basics of English and Mathematics at the secondary level and developing competence in technical and vocational areas is of great importance.
