Horizon detainees to be relocated

Published:Thursday | December 19, 2013 | 9:06 AM

Plans under way to remove persons in custody at the Central Police lock-up to the Horizon Remand Centre before year end.

The decision comes against the background of an instruction from the Public Health Department for the facility to be closed as a result of unsanitary conditions.

National Security Minister Peter Bunting says the logistics are being worked out between the Correctional Services Department and the police to carry out the transfers.

A recent tour of the lock-up by public-health officials and Custos of Kingston Steadman Fuller uncovered inhumane conditions that prompted one member of the touring party to describe the experience as traumatic.
