Increase in coxsackie viral infection in Dominican
Dominican health authorities yesterday warned of an increase in the coxsackie viral infection but that there were no deaths associated with the virus.
The Ministry of Health said the infection, commonly known as hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), normally affects infants and children and that over the past two weeks there have been several reported cases.
It said HFMD is a contagious viral illness and should not to be confused with foot-and-mouth disease which is caused by a different virus and affects cattle, sheep, and pigs.
