BOXING: 'Axeman' back in Jamaica for the holiday season
World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion, Nicholas ‘The Axeman’ Walters of Jamaica, is scheduled to arrive in the country tomorrow from his Panama training camp to spend the holidays with his family.
He will also attend the RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year award ceremony on January 10 for which he has been nominated.
Walters says while on holiday he will be having some hard training under the guidance of his father, Job Walters, who runs a gym in Anchovy, St James.
He was recently ordered to have a mandatory title fight against the WBA Super champion, South African Simpiwe Vetyeka, by April 5 next year.
Walters says he was thrilled to hear that his next opponent had been named as he now has an immediate goal to work towards in 2014.
He only had one fight this year, a successful title defence against Mexican Alberto Garza in Corpus Christi, Texas, on November 9.
He won that fight by a fourth-round technical knockout.
Under a new promotional contract with Bob Arum and his promotional company Top Rank, Walters is guaranteed at least two fights each year.
