Electronic Medical Records System set for 2014 first quarter

The Ministry of Health is to spend $50 million to begin implementing the Electronic Medical Records System within the health sector, which will replace the existing paper-based system.
In an interview with JIS, Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson says the move to implement a paperless system for medical records forms part of the National Strategic Plan for Health Information System.
Ferguson says the project will begin in the first quarter of next year, and it will start with the regional hospitals and the four Centres of Excellence.
Noting that the current paper-based system is outdated, Ferguson says if Jamaica is to get serious about health tourism then modern tools must be implemented.
While not giving a date for the full roll out of the system, the Health Minister said that the aim is to have a system in place sometime within the next financial year.
