T&T steps in to help St Lucia, sends emergency supplies
Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad Bissessar called for the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management to mobilise foodstuff and emergency supplies to be sent to St Lucia, which was badly affected by the inclement weather on Christmas Eve.
In a release Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, who is chairman of CARICOM, said the agency has items in its National Warehouse as well as five pre-positioned and pre-packed 40 feet containers.
The office says the agency's CEO has contacted the Deputy Prime Minister of St Lucia, Philip J. Pierre, and received a list of items that were urgently required by the Government.
The containers with supplies are scheduled to leave for St Lucia this afternoon.
St Lucia was plunged into mourning following the deaths of five people, including a policeman, as a result of floods caused by a weather system that also caused death and destruction in the neighbouring St Vincent and the Grenadines.
