New workplace health, safety law this year - Labour Minister
A new law that seeks to streamline occupational health and safety in the workplace is expected to be approved this year, according to labour minister Derrick Kellier.
Minister Kellier has given an undertaking to have the long-awaited occupational safety and health bill passed in Parliament by the end of the current legislative year. He says plans by his ministry to develop a national occupational safety and health programme and policy are far advanced.
The enactment of an Occupational Safety and Health Act has been in train for several years, spanning several administrations.
But signalling that the Act will be passed by next March, Kellier noted that his ministry has already drafted an occupational safety and health profile for Jamaica.
The bill seeks to streamline existing laws and regulations governing occupational safety and health at the workplace.
