Homeowners and real estate agents are being warned to be careful they do not rent their properties to lottery scammers.

The police are offering to carry out assessments of potential tenants on behalf of landlords.

The police say they have noticed that lottery scammers are renting premises from unsuspecting persons and using these premises to carry out their illicit activities.

According to the police these lottery scammers tend to draw other criminals to the communities in which they reside.

They say this puts the landlord and the community at large at considerable risk, for disputes between opposing groups which often result in gun attacks and other crimes being committed.

They also argue that sometimes innocent by-standers can get caught in the crossfire.
