Published:Monday | January 20, 2014 | 3:39 PM

About 50 years ago today, Rev Martin Luther King Jr appeared on the cover of Time magazine as its Man of the Year, and the United States was on the cusp of passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

A year later on Monday, June 21, 1965 King graced the front page of The Daily Gleaner a day after the iconic leader of the civil rights movement in the US, addressed a crowd at Jamaica's National Arena.

On August 28, 1963, King delivered the speech 'I Have A Dream' to civil rights supporters during the March on Washington during which he called for an end to racism.

Today, the US remembers the civil rights leader as America celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – A US federal holiday, observed on the third Monday of January each year.

King was born January 15, 1929, and he would've been 85 years old today.

The federal holiday celebrating King has been in existence since 1986.
