Criminals collecting rent from homeowners

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

The Police say they are extremely concerned about a new trend in east Kingston in which gangsters have been charging people rent to live in their own homes.

The police say the gang members first chase these people from their homes, then charge them rent to return.

The police say it is a trend they have observed in recent times and have deployed more resources to the area to protect the assets of residents.

Assistant Commissioner of Police George Quallo, under whose command the Kinsgton Eastern Division falls, is describing the action of these criminals as brazen and disgraceful.

According to ACP Quallo, the Police will not allow barefaced criminals to drive away people who have worked for their homes and then charge them rent to live in their own homes.

The police have also vowed to continue their search for those who are involved for the upsurge of violence in those communities.

However, they are urging residents of the area, especially in Rockfort, to do their part by reporting any form of intimidation by criminal elements in their communities.

Residents are advised to call 119, 811, 311 or the nearest Police Station to report any act of intimidation from these criminal elements.
