Texas executes Mexican man despite federal gov't objection

Published:Thursday | January 23, 2014 | 8:17 AM

The US state of Texas last night went ahead with the execution of a Mexican man convicted of murder, despite the objections of the Federal Government and Mexico.

Mexico had said that the execution of 46-year-old Edgar Tamayo would have violated international law.

It said Tamayo was not told of his right to seek legal assistance from the Mexican consulate when he was arrested.

US Secretary of State John Kerry made the rare move of asking Texas to delay the execution.

But the Mexican was put to death last night.
