REGIONAL: Bahamas telecoms company nationalised

Published:Saturday | January 25, 2014 | 6:44 PM

Prime Minister of The Bahamas Perry Christie has described as historic an agreement that returns majority economic interest in The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) to the state.

In 2011, the then government of The Bahamas sold 51 per cent interest in BTC to British communications conglomerate Cable and Wireless.

But Christie says his administration has managed to secure an amicable return of majority interest in BTC to the State at no cost to taxpayers.

He called the agreement a win-win for the government and people of The Bahamas.
