Flash flood watch extended

Published:Sunday | January 26, 2014 | 12:09 PM

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has extended the Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood prone areas of Portland and St Mary.

The measure will now remain in place until 5 o’clock this afternoon.

The Meteorological Service says a trough east of Jamaica is expected to move across the island later today.

It says projections are for scattered showers to affect sections of most parishes today and especially eastern parishes, including St Mary and Portland.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Warning is issued.

Last weekend, heavy rains devastated sections of St Mary, with the parish council estimating damage at J$180 million.
