JUTC to introduce Smarter Cards, Smart Cards being phased out

Published:Monday | January 27, 2014 | 10:36 AM

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is urging commuters to make use of its Smarter Card as the company aims to improve its service delivery.

The company has already acquired 60,000 Smarter Cards to be distributed to the public in preparation for the full implementation of the cashless system on April 1.

Deputy Managing Director of Operations at the JUTC, Kirk Finnikin, says as of that date the Smart Card will no longer be valid for use on buses.

He says all buses have already been equipped with the platform to allow for use of the Smarter Card.

Passengers who benefit from concessionary fares will also be required to use the electronic system.

The introduction of the cashless system is part of efforts by the state-run bus company to stop revenue leakage at the JUTC.
