Jamaica to participate in US-hosted Caribbean security conference

Jamaica is among several Caribbean states participating in the 2014 Caribbean Nations Security Conference, which opens in the Dominican Republic today.

The United States, through its Southern Command is also facilitating the conference.

The conference will discuss the progress of ongoing efforts to bolster the region’s security and information-sharing capabilities.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Caribbean security support to the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative: Sustaining the capacity to counter transnational organised crime.”

The Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, was developed by US and Caribbean leaders to substantially reduce illicit trafficking, increase public safety and security, and promote social justice.

Since 2010, the US has committed more than US263 million to support the initiative.

Defense, law enforcement and civilian leaders representing 21 countries are to participate in the function.
