The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Company says a major overhaul is now underway at its power plant in Rockfort, East Kingston.

It says the 29-year-old facility is ranked as the second best power plant in Jamaica, in terms of cost and efficiency.

The JPS says the overhaul of one of the two units at Rockfort, comes as part of an ongoing Plant Reliability and Improvement Strategy, being undertaken at the power company.

Manager of Generation Technical Services, Andre Modest, says this type of biennial work being done on the unit will ensure that the machine is kept operational for a minimum of another 8-10 years.

The overhaul is scheduled for completion on February 14 and is being carried out at a cost of US$3.2 million.

The JPS says about 100 new jobs will be created during the project.
