Hermitage Dam below 50% capacity

Corporate Area customers of the National Water Commission (NWC) are to face further water restrictions.

In a media release, the NWC said the Hermitage Dam has fallen to below 50 per cent of its capacity and the Meteorological Office of Jamaica is projecting very limited rainfall for most areas during February and March.

The NWC says with the continued reduction in rainfall in catchment areas, Corporate Area water supply systems are now being placed under further restriction.

The company says the move is in keeping with its drought management plan and its commitment to ensure water supply to customers throughout the dry period projected to last until April.

In January, the NWC began restricting water supply to communities in the Corporate Area between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The NWC is now warning that most Corporate Area communities will continue to receive reduced nighttime water supply during February, unless the rainfall and storage levels change dramatically.

Corporate Area customers are therefore being urged to make every effort to store and conserve water.
