ST JAMES, Jamaica:

The National Water Commission (NWC) is advising customers served by the Portobello Deep-well in Montego Bay, St James that water supply will not be restored today as expected.

The NWC says rehabilitative work is continuing on the well.

It says the $10-million rehabilitation exercise became necessary after the well developed a mechanical problem which was a manifestation of a more serious structural problem with the inside of the well.

The NWC says due to the extent of the damage, the Commission has had to revise its restoration date to March 9.

However, it has sought to assure customers that the performance of the well and reliability of water supply will be increased significantly when the repairs are completed.
