Mentally ill inmate reportedly slashes the throat of another in Kingston prison

The throat of a mentally ill inmate was allegedly slashed by another mentally ill inmate this morning.



The incident took place about 10 a.m. at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.



According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the injured inmate was taken to the institution’s hospital where he was seen and pronounced dead by the medical doctor on duty.



The deceased inmate who was diagnosed as schizophrenic was charged for murder but deemed Unfit to Plea.



The accused who is diagnosed as being psychotic was also charged for murder and deemed Unfit to Plea.



The DCS says every effort is being made to contact the next of kin or relatives of the deceased.



The Elletson Road Police as well as personnel from Scene of Crime and the department’s Inspectorate Unit are investigating the inmate’s death.



The Inspectorate Unit of Ministry of National Security and INDECOM will also be officially informed.
