Angela Merkel proposes European network to protect data

Published:Saturday | February 15, 2014 | 7:14 PM

The proposed network would avoid emails and other data automatically passing the United States.

Merkel raised the issue in her weekly podcast and says she will raise the issue on Wednesday with French President Francois Hollande.

The proposal comes in the wake of huge concerns across Europe that the United States’ National Security Agency has been monitoring the communications of several top officials there.
