Trial today for cop in pregnant St Thomas woman's murder

Corporal Dwayne Smart, the policeman charged with the 2012 murder of a pregnant St Thomas woman is expected to stand trial in the Home Circuit Court today.



The policeman has been in custody since September 2012 after being charged with the murder of Kay-Ann Lamont.



The Crown is alleging that Lamont and Corporal Smart got into an altercation after he attempted to arrest her for using indecent language.



During the scuffle, Corporal Smart allegedly shot the pregnant woman twice in the head, killing her.



Corporal Smart then reportedly shot Lamont’s sister in the shoulder.



It was further reported that the policeman attempted to shoot another sister but she escaped.



The policeman is being represented by attorney-at-law Valerie Neita Robertson.

He has been denied bail on numerous occasions.
